This dude also talks about 10gbs and speeds required for video editing. That’s something you don’t get with your average internet connection, and even if, it’s unsure your average cloud service provider can match.

I thought so too until this week. These days I’m reconsidering. /c/all is as least as bad a shot hole with this unhinged hate on Jews as /r/all with their white supremacy fascism.

Your condescension is matched only by your reading comprehension.

Bruh. Look into a mirror.

I’m stunned that you are unfamiliar with the versioning feature of backups. In my bubble this has been best practice since Apple came along with the Time Machine, but really we tried that even before with rsync, albeit only with limited success.

This is different from git because this takes care about all files and configurations, and it does so automatically. Furthermore it also includes rules when to thin out and discard old versions, because space remains an issue.

Synologys backup tool is quite similar to Time Machine, and that’s what I am using the second NAS for. I used to have a USB hard drive for that task, but it crashed and my old Synology and a few old disks were available. That’s better because it also protects against a number of attacks that make all mounted paths unusable.

Git is not a backup tool. It’s a versioning tool, best used for text files.

Raid is no backup. Raid helps you against drive failure.

Backup helps you if you or some script screwed up your data, or you need to go back to last months version of a file for whatever other reason.

Aws helps if your house burns down and you need to set up again from scratch.

Same, although aws is my plan b. For plan a I have an older Synology that is a full backup target.

I have done this with calibre and a Kindle, worked fine.

Nowadays I prefer reading on my phone, and loading ePubs on any eBook reader is a non brainer.

And if you’re not sure how much of tinkering you want to do a Synology with docker support is a good option.

Sure, but the GOP is merely a traitor to the American people. MAGA tops that by being traitor even to the GOP.

You can use IMAP in the same easy as POP. What you describe I do with IMAP alone.

Manage your mail on multiple clients, as in native software that runs on a device. If your client always deletes upon fetching your mail, another device won’t see it.

That’s totally not a point. When the admin of an instance has no interest in even getting close to something that might get them into court, it’s totally fine that they take measures.

Whether you like that or not is just as irrelevant as whether another admin was in court already.

Who do you think the instance admins are? These are normal people, techies who know about running a server. But without a legal department.

They’ll not be eager to even risk a court case.

I’m a professional in software development, sometimes tasked with administration stuff.

At home I love my FRITZ!Box. The only thing I’m missing is DNS rewriting, but I can work around that. If you don’t know what that is you don’t need it anyway.

Was VitaminX splitting the profits with a rogue admin?

Uh, a conspiracy theory in the baking.

again, while true that description is neither complete nor distinguished. It would get maybe 1 out of four possible points in a high school exam.

Not helpful for most things.

That’s true in the same way as you are nothing else but molecules and some biochemical reactions.

It’s reductionist, and otherwise not a useful description of a human, tells nothing about interaction possibilities, lifestyle or lifespan for example.

It’s also not an accurate description, because “molecules and biochemical reactions” describes very very many life forms, just as “a computer” could be your smartphone. But aside from both being a computer, a smartphone is quite distinct from a cloud.

Happened for me on Lemmy.world. I eventually abandoned that account.

It’s not the promised land of open source and free software. But at the very least they have a business model that does not consist of selling all my data to the highest bidder.

I think that much we can acknowledge.

Now, will they comply with law enforcement, usually yes. That’s part of running a company, and that’s a good thing. But what do you expect? Some medium sized free software company (because to sell hardware you need a company) that does not comply with law enforcement?

That’s raising expectations to unfulfillable levels. Are you a forever unsatisfiable grievance-monger?

Sorry to hear that DuckDuckGo doesn’t work for you. Maybe you gotta use Google instead because there just is no alternative.

I think Apples philosophy is that for everything you normally do on your iPhone you use an app. The browser is only for exceptions, and that’s reflected in the care they put in it.

I don’t know why you hate the keyboard. It works just fine with a multitude of features for me, for which I’d install two or three different keyboards on my Android devices. Why on earth you would want to install a 3rd party keyboard of all things is beyond me. That’s the thing where you type in all your passwords.

not @yoz, but it’s totally possible to avoid Google.

iPhone, just another web mail provider, OpenStreetMaps, DuckDuckGo, and whatever else I need I host myself on my Synology.

I use Google at work because I have to, but otherwise it stays out of my life.

To back up my Synology: My first level is an old Synology, the second is Amazon Glacier.

I’m back to Mail clients. Webmail is a compromise that didn’t work out for me well.

I use Gmail at work because I have to. It’s good for it’s company integration, but privately no thanks.

I did for a while, but it never felt right.

I’m also lazy a f, so I purchased a new router that comes with WireGuard VPN and that works well enough with our iPhones.

Oh I would recommend Synology too, but since many already did there’s no reason to do this again.

old Pc

Watch power consumption though. It matters for a device that runs potentially 24/7

Why would you care about getting banned from Reddit?

I have been using Synology NAS for a decade now, currently still running a DS918+.

What I want to tinker with I can do with docker, but often I don’t, because that’s my “cloud” for most everything and stability is priority one. So far, Synology delivered on that without fail. It’s an amazing product company.

I self host my imap Server that my clients access. I have a minutely cron job that first fetches, then deletes, the emails from my mail provider.

I don’t self host smtp.

With that I have all the advantages of self hosted email, but no integration problems.
