I thought you don’t need a VPN for things like usenet

Started with running a minecraft realm then it grew to the point greifers became a problem so we needed plug-ins for protection. So that led to having a managed hosted server then a VPS and then finally self hosting

I just went with a sliger case and shoved my old gaming mobo in there and with my router and everything else in a rack it’s nice to keep everything quiet and not that hot. I think rack mount is the way to go, before that I just had a table with things all over

Yeah plus the pricing change where you only get so many updates now kind of bucks but it was bound to happen

I’ve been happy with unraid, super simple to use and the community apps makes it easy to find and install docker containers

Oh got it, I use wire guard as a VPN for services that only I need but for things I share with multiple people I use cloudflare tunnel after learning about it from youtube tutorials

You can use cloudflare tunnels which skips having to open ports and can also proxy the connection so people can’t find your home IP address depending on what services you’re setting up

I just made nextcloud keep the vault folder on my device and pointed Obsidian to the nextcloud folder

Obsidian

I just created a vault that I keep in my nextcloud to keep it synced across devices

I bought two of those serverpartdeals drives after seeing them recommended on reddit after searching for good refurbished drives and they have been running fine for a few months now with no errors in the smart data

awesome Im going to finally get this installed on my server today

I just had a baby and I’m already planning how to get her to help me run my home lab as a way to get her to figure all this stuff out, maybe run some game servers or do a little local blog. Then I think about how I can teach her to solder a hand wired keyboard or maybe build a little fpv drone with me and then I start to remember that kids sometimes just don’t like what you do so you never know what you could get them interested in or not or if you will each have the time when they’re older

Sure but I doubt these researchers are in a position to provide all that

My internet tech came to setup a new ONT and had a bunch of time to kill so we talked about hobbies, I guess he builds arcade machines and was showing me pictures of all the wiring and woodwork he did plus programming to get it all functioning and the custom pc inside. It looked like a ton of work.

I gave him some spare 12th Gen i7 mobo combos for him to use in his builds as he said he was looking for more parts and usually puts in a 3080 video card in each

They can get really technical pretty fast

https://www.instagram.com/arcade_army/ His instagram that has some cool build photos

I recently started getting my drives from serverpartdeals 3.5". The refrubs seem to work great for my use case of just media. I have a second unraid server that is just 2.5" ssd’s and 4 nvme’s that I use for my personal files and photos since it’s a much smaller and low power build I can stuff a bunch in a mini itx case so 2.5" is great for that

I mean you’d hope people would have kids to play games with them, which means they would probably build their own steam library hopefully before you die and would be willing to hand it off. While you’re alive you can use the family share setting so they can play your games and leave them the credentials to your account in your family’s password manager that they inherit

I use it to sync all my photoshop projects and documents from my different machines to my server and to have access to those files from my phone , it’s the first thing I install when I do a fresh install of my os since everything I use is there

Awesome, I’m not sure what substacks is but ghost is pretty cool and I like to federate

If only, that’s an old project now you can’t touch it because you have to focus on the new one. Any issues just add it to the sustaining tracker and maybe one day someone will think to look at it

Just download the GBs when you get home

I set up my plex so it auto searches and downloads things added to the watch list, that and I follow a few lists in trakt for upcoming shows and movies so between the two it’s much more content that any streaming service we uses to have

Yeah after two years even my parents and brother are on signal plus most of my close friends, the rest I just use regular sms

The trick is to make as much money as possible then jump ship to a newer competing company that has the ability to grow more before you leech it to death again

I follow my lemmy community with my rss and I tossed in a few other sites I felt interested in but always forget to look at like the local paper, that said my server has been collecting months of info but I haven’t setup the link to my mobile app out of laziness so it has all been going to waste

Man I was using Amazon prime because my server was down for maintenance and my search results didn’t contain thr words I searched for until much lower in the results, then half the stuff needed extra subscriptions or had ads like what is the point

Yeah it can import information from spotify then search for everything with your Downloader depending on if you torrent or usenet and you can set the quality that you want so it can keep upgrading your library over time as it finds better quality up to the max that you set

Lidarr can pull Spotify playlists or followed artists. Also have a look at the trash guides for setting up sonarr and radar, now there’s even a docker that auto co figures your sonarr and radar based off the latest trash guide settings

Is it pretty close to playing oblivion or skyrim single player?

You can link them together at least that’s how the discord and matrix chats are for our instance are. I can chat from discord and get replies from people in matrix

man I remember using a 8" windows tablet with a 3d printed mount to a xbox controller to be able to play steam games like hyperlight drifter, it was so cool at the time but man did it suck holding it for long and the performance was so bad for anything but the simplest game. after that I turned to steam link with my phone and a razer kishi controller, I setup a headless steam docker on my server to keep my games accessible and that worked pretty well when 5G came out but nothing really beats games running on the hardware you hold in your hand, at least not for a good while

if you streamed it at the proper bitrate you would be using a ton of data at 4k, even streaming from my own server to my tv sometimes is too much since my TV only has a 100mbit nic on it on films like 1917 the bit rate would spike on some scenes and it will start to stutter or stop playing all together, for that I had to use my xbox or maybe Ill invest in a roku or shield with a 1gb nic. but for regular streaming you might get the resolution in 4k but you’ll see in dark scenes these like squares and artifacts because of how its compressed down to be able to get to you through the internet while not annihilating your bandwidth

I tried getting music through usenet and ended up just caving and joining my friends Spotify family plan because it was such a pain. I still have lidarr synced with Spotify so as I find new music it tracks it and tries to pull it but most fails
