In the profession of software development, the transition to remote work has been a significant shift for many, including myself. My journey into the world of working from home began well before COVID-19. It started as an experiment with flexibility, gradually transforming from a couple of days a week to a full-time remote work setup. This change of course was because of my managers who showed a level of trust in me.

I have a personal theory that a lot of complaints about working in-person go away when you remove very long commutes, in particular by car.

A bit like how most complaints about pull requests go away if you make it a priority to get them done as fast as possible.

I had a 20-30 minute commute each way on transit or a 1 hour walk. Still love working from home more.

A 5 minute commute still necessitates putting on pants. Can’t win there.

I’ve been wfh since covid hit, I still put on pants every workday to keep myself from treating it like an eternal Saturday. I know if I start slipping I’ll become one of the laziest people on the planet

You can also put on a cute skirt if you want.

My personal theory is that a lot of advocacy for working in-person goes away when you remove:

  1. People that financially benefit from office culture (office land lords, restaurants near office buildings, janitorial services, etc.)
  2. Social vampires that view the office as the best place to gossip and share their boring personal lives with a captive audience
  3. Managers and executives with poor leadership skills and low self esteem
