Just want to chip in some support for the unions, if they fail, we all fail. Pretty crappy how news coverage today is already pinning the union as the ones holding up trade and small business across the country. There are two sides to this, one has clearly dragged its heels on being fair to their staff and have created this situation. We got to stop putting the interests of giant corporations ahead of individuals. People deserve a fair wage for their work.
The BC Maritime Employers Association says it has gone as far as possible on core issues and it doesn’t think more bargaining is going to produce a collective agreement.
Clearly not far enough. If all those business associations really think that the delays are affecting vital parts of the Canadian economy, they should chip in to give them compensation they deserve; provide support for the value that these workers bring.
Smells like the employer is trying to get a similar resolution as the Biden vs. Rail worker unions, up here in Canada.
As it stands currently, automation hurts everyone except the business.
When a business replaces a job with automation, they do it because it will save them money. They no longer have to pay a wage and the associated taxes with it, like EI, CPP, or worker’s compensation.
This hurts the worker, obviously, but it also hurts the government. There is now less revenue in the form of income tax. Currently, the majority of government revenue comes from income tax. This means less money for healthcare, education, and other government programs.
I’m not against automation, but I think it needs to be done responsibly. We should start taxing automation where it replaces a job, and use that money to help retrain workers for new jobs.

It’s a legitimate concern. There’s good reason that union spokesperson was telling the federal government to keep their nose out of it the other day.
… And they will. Canada is run by neoliberals who will cater the business’s every whim
While I support the first two points, the last one is a losing battle.
Automation shouldn’t be a provision in contracts imo
If your job can be automated, it should be. Maybe they should negotiate for a higher severance package if their job is automated, instead?

Or because it improves quality, safety, efficiency and other aspects of the job…
