Pharmacy group Rite Aid was ordered Tuesday to stop using facial recognition for the next five years by a US regulator, which said the company falsely identified consumers as shoplifters using the technology.

The police use it more like an excuse to harass people of color.

The pharmacy group, which is currently in bankruptcy proceedings, also failed to properly train employees about the fact that there could be false positives with the technology or to prevent the use of low-quality images.

They’re a legitimately shitty place even without the facial recognition. Long waits on the phone, only to have them hang up. Long waits in the store. Poor communication about any issues (they’ll tell you after you wait in line). Poor time estimates when things will be ready. Look at reviews for your local one and they’ll likely have similar issues. This isn’t even new, been the case for years.

Important to note that this is not even the first time they’ve been called out by the FTC. They were already cited for this program not having sufficient consumer protections in 2010 and given a list of changes to implement, which they failed to do.

Good. Now they need to start enforcing bans on corporate facial recognition technology use everywhere.
