However, there is some registration you can sign up for to help comply with: “The “safe harbor” provisions (section 512) protect service providers who meet certain conditions from monetary damages for the infringing activities of their users and other third parties on the net.” You will have to read about it further, but I saw it mentioned when others were discussing setting up an instance. There is a very good Matrix chat where you can get a lot of help too with set up, etc. There’s also a few communities for hosting lemmy, such as !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml

Only one way to find out. ;) You can always limit signups if you get overwhelmed. Get yourself one of those DMCA protection licenses too, they’re very cheap afaik.

You do not have to share to use Soulseek but it is nice to do. Some people require it to access their files, but you can choose another user instead to avoid it. I would not encourage you to share unless you knew what you were doing and took proper steps to protect yourself. Bless.

You can follow users and communities and I think communicate from mastodon to lemmy, but you cant really follow from lemmy, yet. I do believe there are ways to comment, though. if you search the community or user name on mastodon (eg xyz@instance.org) then it should pop up.

I started on Mastodon last year and watching it increase in size by orders of magnitude over the last several months has been a beautiful thing to watch. I am thrilled Lemmy has taken off, finally. The fediverse has restored my faith in humanity quite a bit and consuming it feels healthier, there is no way I am going back to centralised platforms. Come to mastodon and get a glimpse at what Lemmy may become. :)

Path of least resistance is usually best in these cases, and frankly, it’s nicer here. I have been waiting for Lemmy to pick up after trying other fediverse applications and there is no way I am going back for any application. Now we just need YT to implode.
