Stop projecting, maybe? No, I’m not forced. But I want to, because I refuse to pay any more money to such a shitty company. I paid for the product, now I’m gonna use it the way I want to.

Price is not my reason for pirating. Seriously, people are different from you, stop assuming that everyone has the same motivation as you do.

I mean, who doesn’t? But nah, I just don’t want to pay a company that does as much horrible stuff as Nintendo does. That pretty much means I own an expensive paperweight which I’m not a huge fan of as well. So I decided it’s gonna be a pirating only console.

I don’t like the way Nintendo destroys people’s lives just because they “lost” a few dollars.

So it will become a MIG switch only system, right? Also, how does one get caught? I’m not into online games in general, so I wouldn’t be playing any multiplayer games. Is the simple fact that the game’s certificate was used on multiple devices simultaneously enough to flag the device?

Is it safe to use MIG Switch for pirating?
I have a MIG Switch and a few pirated games, though I'm afraid it will ban my account, including games I've bought. I don't use Switch anymore due to philosophical reasons, so it's probably not a huge deal, but it would probably still piss me off, because I spent some money there. Do you think it could be mitigated by resetting the switch to the factory settings and never logging in?

We use .lh, short for localhost. For local network services I use service discovery and .local. And for internal stuff we just use a subdomain of our domain.

I personally only turn it off when someone’s visiting over night and the noise disturbs them, otherwise I just leave it on nonstop. Mainly because it would annoy me to try to open whatever and find out I have to turn on the server first. I don’t have a UPS and never even thought about getting one (for the server, I’m thinking of getting one for my 3D printer).

So, as mentioned in the post, I, an admin of lemmings.world, have reviewed the claims to the best of my abilities over the last few days and everything seems legit.

Note that you should still be cautious when sharing information like that and especially if you share information about your darknet activities, always use Tor or something that anonymizes you the same or better.

I use Proton Mail for my primary domain and then addy.io for redirects to it. It costs $10 a year or something like that and it’s all I actually need.

Replying to emails is as easy as just hitting reply, the only thing that’s slightly harder is sending entirely new email (as in not replying) but even that can either be remembered, or the special email address copied from the addy.io app.

Entertainment, on the other hand, isn’t really required at all.

That’s false and also has been a known fact for centuries, if not millennia. People need food, shelter and entertainment, in that order.

Your idea of what constitutes a nash equilibrium is wrong. I buy games because I have them all together, ready to download at a moment’s notice. I have the money to buy them and find it more comfortable, thus I don’t pirate any games.

At the same time I pirate movies because streaming companies constantly change their offer so I can’t ever be sure I’ll find any movie there - downloading them and using Plex is simply more comfortable.

Morals play no role in me pirating or buying content, it’s simple convenience. Turns out Gabe Newell was right - piracy is a service issue.

Avahi basically broadcasts to the whole network “hello there, my name is some-cool-domain.local”. When you request that address, your router checks if someone broadcasts that name and uses their IP if so.

Yes, indeed, it’s your local timezone.

store all of the documents, desktop, downloads, etc. on a couple computers

Why use SSHFS for that? I recommend using Syncthing, it’s great for synchronizing stuff across multiple PCs (local and remote).

  1. It’s pretty much needed only for online stuff, so single-player only is no problem. Also cloud saves.
  2. Yes, multiple local accounts are possible.
  3. Probably, since I no longer pay for online services, so nothing much will change for me.

OOP on its most fundamental level is the principle that stuff is represented by objects and those objects communicate with each other. That’s it, that’s the whole OOP.

What you are probably referring to is how OOP solves different problems and the different patterns it uses. Those are not OOP itself, those are basically instructions on how to do OOP correctly without shooting yourself in the foot.

So SOLID, IoC, dependency injection, factory, composition over inheritance and all the other famous principles are not OOP itself, but any medium-size app that’s not following them is set for really fun times ~5 years down the road.

Not sure if I’ve answered your question, it’s really vague, feel free to ask further.

You need to host your domain somewhere, meaning some DNS provider needs to be the authority on what gets routed where when someone accesses your domain.

The provider will give you a list of nameservers when you make the domain part of their DNS.

I don’t know if there are any that are free (if you don’t also buy a domain from them), so you’ll have to check on your own. You can also self-host a bind9 server and do your DNS there.

Because without the proper DRM implementation it’s trivial to rip it. So they’re only letting you rip the low quality version. Which feels really stupid, because people who know how to rip the 4K content exist and are happy to share the results.

Off topic, but is there any tutorial on how to do this Usenet thing? Feel free to contact me on Matrix, it’s on my profile.

More book releases than porn releases? This is indeed the weird timeline.

I doubt it, it’s much easier to mod the console. Or just use a boot disc (or whatever those were called, I had the chip mod, so I don’t remember, but my friend used to have the disc which he had to insert before playing a pirated game).

How do you know that? Stabbing and throwing acid into people’s faces is exactly what I’d call a British lifestyle in this context.

Because it’s quite common there? I’m not really sure what’s the confusion here. Is it common enough in the US that it’s infamous for it? Yes. Does that somehow make a shooting in a different country their fault? No.

No one is blaming US here. It was obviously the murderer’s fault. I don’t know how’d you come to the conclusion I’m blaming US. I was just mentioning the fact that it’s pretty common in the US while it’s not at all common here (or in Europe in general). And I always said that I’m quite relieved that these things are not happening here and that no one’s getting inspired by the US shootings. I think this sentiment is quite common among Europeans.

Ah, I’ve only ever seen it in combination with a tunnel, so I assumed it’s part of that.

It makes a tunnel through to you and links to that.

True. But pretty much the same applies for dynamic DNS services, except you have to trust your dynamic DNS provider.

I meant more because people generally don’t have as much time to spend on IT security as companies, but yeah, it works for privacy as well.

My recommendation: host OpenVPN, change the default port and only access your NAS from the internet using your VPN. Also only allow the VPN port on your router firewall.

Security by obscurity is no security at all. You should really invalidate and change the key. I personally would fire you if I ever found out you leaked credentials and then did nothing about it.

Because it’s only gaining traction, while the commenter made it sound like everyone was using it instead of jQuery. Which is simply not true, everyone is using Vue, React, Angular, Svelte and so on.

Finally some good news! I've been waiting for quite a while for such a ruling. Edit: Seems this cites an article from 2012, I didn't notice that (and it's still news to me). Though there's still hope that it'll happen, EU is slow, but usually eventually gets shit done.

Ah, mine didn’t make the cut. It’s https://api.pornstars-per-capita.com and it does exactly what you expect based on the domain name.

I’d just add that using docker is easy on NixOS:

virtualisation.docker.enable = true;

Possibly also this to allow using docker without root: users.users..extraGroups = [ "docker" ]; (beware that this effectively adds root privileges to the user).

Which in some cases means also disabling trackers. Adobe Photoshop comes to mind - you need to disable communication with Adobe servers for the crack to work, essentially disabling telemetry as a byproduct.

Witcher 3. For like sixth time. I think I might need some help, because I’ve bought around 5 games last month and I didn’t even open them.

Just thinking out loud, but can’t you build it from sources?

Half of that are lies and you can clearly see how up to date it is, because in one example it mentions php 5.1. That is close to 20 years old, it was released in 2005. I’m not gonna spend my time trying to disprove something that refers to a 20 years old version as its point of reference.

Don’t get me wrong, there are valid drawbacks of PHP (as with any language), this document just isn’t a good representation of that.

[Baby Journal] A private and open source app for tracking your baby activities
I'd like to introduce my app which I have been working on for about half a year, it's called Baby Journal and it's an end-to-end encrypted app for tracking your baby activities, like feeding, diaper changes and so on. On iOS you can install it to your homescreen as a webapp, on Android you can either install it as a webapp or directly from Google Play. On both you can just run it from your browser. Neither has any advantage over the other, the content will be the same. Links: - [baby-journal.app](https://baby-journal.app) - the (optionally installable) webapp - [Google Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.baby_journal.twa) - [Backend source code](https://github.com/RikudouSage/BabyJournalApi) - [App source code](https://github.com/RikudouSage/BabyJournalUi) --- Now onto the app itself! The biggest feature is that it's entirely end to end encrypted and I as the server operator have no access to your unencrypted data. I'm of the opinion that the privacy of your kids should not be compromised for some company to make a quick buck. What activities can the app track? - **feeding tracking** - nursing (left and right breast separately), bottle, solid foods - **diaper changes** - wet, poopy or both, you can also select the color and amount - **breast pumping** - left and right breast separately - **sleeping** - **temperature taking** - **weight** - **length** - **milestones** - with cute descriptions! - with ability to add custom milestones And some cool features! - **tracker** - just hit start on your activity and let the app count how long it takes - **multiple babies** - if you have more than one bundle of joy, you can switch between them easily - **sharing with multiple other accounts** - you can easily share your data with as many people as you want without compromising privacy - **shared tracking** - if you use the app with multiple people, you can enable shared tracking - start tracking on one device, finish tracking on another - **data at a quick glance** - on the main screen you can see when was your baby fed for the last time, when they had a diaper changed and so on - **various fine-tune settings** - do you want to calculate the time since last feeding since the beginning of the feeding or since the end? Do you want to ignore small gaps between multiple feedings (for example 10 minutes while you switch from nursing to bottle) as one feeding session? Does water count as feeding? All configurable! - **daily summary** - you can get a nice summary where you can see all the important data in a concise format > Currently the data can only be tracked in metric units, but imperial support is coming. > Note that the encrypted nature has one downside - if you don't export your account code and lose access to the app (for example your device breaks), there's no way to recover your account. I advise you to securely store your account code as soon as possible. --- For advanced users there's also a self-hosting option! You can run your own backend and app. Or you can just run your own backend and point the official app to it. Currently there's not much documentation on how to do that, but if you need that, I can write something up. --- Do let me know if you have any questions!

Lemmy schedule - add date to the post title (example: 2023-10-04 14:15:13+0200)
A new feature has been added, this one is especially useful for recurring post - it allows you to add the date and/or time of the post to the title. As an example you can use this exact post which should contain a date that looks something like **2023-10-04 14:15:00+0200** (note that the second will most likely be different, because the scheduler is not exact to the second). This is how I've written the title in Lemmy Schedule: **Lemmy schedule - add date to the post title (example: #[InjectDate('Y-m-d H:i:sO')]#)**. You may notice the `#[InjectDate('Y-m-d H:i:sO')]#` - this is an expression that will be evaluated at the time of posting. Currently only the `InjectDate` expression is supported and it takes exactly one parameter. If you're a programmer, you probably recognize it, it's a format for the date. Just beware that it uses the [PHP date format](https://www.php.net/manual/en/datetime.format.php#refsect1-datetime.format-parameters) which might differ slightly from your favorite language. If you're not a programmer, the documentation is not that hard - you see a letter (like `F`) and its description (`A full textual representation of a month, such as January or March`). When you include `F` in the parameter, it means it will be replaced with current month name (`October`). If this is too hard for you and you want it for one or few posts, tell what you want the title to look like and I'll write it for you. Note that there's a preview of what the title looks like: ![Preview of the Lemmy Schedule dynamic title](https://i.imgur.com/7e8bxYU.png) You'll also know if you've provided something that looks like it should be an expression but is not recognized: ![Preview of the Lemmy Schedule dynamic title with invalid expression](https://i.imgur.com/YXLvBEF.png) Here are some examples: - `Weekly discussion - week ##[InjectDate('W')]#` - **Weekly discussion - week #40** - `Monthly discussion - #[InjectDate('F')]# #[InjectDate('Y')]#` - **Monthly discussion - October 2023** - `Monthly discussion - #[InjectDate('F Y')]#` - equivalent to the above, just wanted to show that you can use it multiple times - `Daily thread - #[InjectDate('d.m.Y')]#` - **Daily thread - 03.10.2023** Let me know what you think! --- You can find the tool at https://schedule.lemmings.world You can also self-host it using docker: https://github.com/RikudouSage/LemmySchedule/#self-hosting---docker

Multiple people have been asking about it, so the support for self-hosting using docker is added. The quickest way to get it up and running is using `docker-compose`: https://github.com/RikudouSage/LemmySchedule/#docker-compose In the coming days I'll be adding support for locking the app to a single instance only, meaning if you self host it alongside your Lemmy instance, only people from your own instance will be able to use it.
