Canada is one of the United States’ largest trading partners, but President Trump wants to either take it or leave it.

As Mr. Trump prepares to push ahead with a new round of tariffs on the United States’ neighbors to the north and south, he has expressed a special brand of loathing for Canada. The bullying of a country whose most prominent stereotype is that its people are “nice” has led to political upheaval in Canada and created both consternation and speculation about why Mr. Trump wants to engage in a trade war with one of America’s biggest trading partners.

. . .

Intrigue abounds in Canada about why Mr. Trump has repeatedly belittled a neighbor and threatened to destabilize its economy with tariffs, a process that has brought relations between the two countries to a low point not seen in decades.

In contrast to the close and supportive relationship that Mr. Trudeau, who is entering his final week in office, enjoyed with another U.S. president, Barack Obama, his relationship with Mr. Trump has been fractious.

The article doesn’t offer any real evidence of the “love” side of this supposed “love-hate relationship”. The nearest thing I could find was this bit at the end, which isn’t super loving:

“I love Canada, I love the people of Canada,” Mr. Trump said at a cabinet meeting at the White House. “It’s not fair for us to be supporting Canada — If we don’t support them, they don’t subsist as a nation.”

I think the only answer is: journalists write stories, editors write headlines 🤷

Well, given past history I’d say his version of “love” likely equates to assault in most sane places, so it fits

The only writing that really helped me understand all this bullshit was Justin Ling’s on Navarro

My (Canadian) coworker is a giant Trump lover. Weirdly she votes NDP here and hates all the conservatives at every level. I don’t bother fighting her because there’s no sense in trying, but I asked her politely during the first batch of his Canada nonsense what she thought of what he was doing regarding us, and she has the nerve to tell me she “didn’t want to talk politics, but he’s doing good things for his own country”. How? He’s doing nothing but alienating everyone, claiming it’s because of fentanyl at our borders. Less than 1 percent of the fentanyl that crossed the border came from us. They could literally end up in the dark, and Doug Ford the drug dealer says he’ll cut their power off with a smile on his face, and considering the wave of popularity being anti Trump gave him I don’t rule it out altogether.

This is what a global far right power grab looks like, creating chaos everywhere.

Seriously.

She’s a union member. She does not get that this is not something Republicans support. It’s bizarre. She hates Doug Ford.
