I think he should resign.

However, I get the political aspect of this. And it’s impossible to ignore. Like others have mentioned, Al Franken resigned immediately and look what good that did. And that was over something pretty mild, not even criminal.

In addition, this is another example of Democrats and liberals always playing by the rules, trying to stick to the high road, while Republicans and conservatives refuse to abide by the rules, outright changing them if needed/wanted. A GOP pol would never resign for anything so “petty” as corruption. And we’d kinda expect that to be the case. Some of us might grumble but then move on. But we sure do expect Democrats to “Do the right thing,” even if it costs us.

And it doesn’t matter if we choose the high road. If Menendez resigns, Republicans point and say, “Look! Democrats are corrupt!” If he doesn’t, they say, “Well why should our own who are accused of misconduct resign if Democrats won’t do it?!” And voters will eat it up.

It sucks, because this creates a race to the bottom. But what if he’s found not guilty? Was it worth it? To take the high road? For what? And if he is found guilty…well so what? What does any of this actually get us? Other than moral superiority?

So do I still think he should resign? Yeah, probably. But maybe let’s not be so hasty. Let’s see where this goes.

Because just like Republicans, it’s all a sham. Neither side has any morals. You just happen to like one more than the other.

I agree I hate both sides. Just live for humanity.

When I made my original comment I hadn’t read the article… hiding goods in clothes and around the house is pretty common. But It just so happens he’s rich and a politician. I could see it being legit… especially for his age… it just seems like such a d older guy thing to do.

If it was the Republican party and a Republican with charges, they would be unified in their decision to not call for any resignation. Most would defend him on-air.

They would absolutely be calling the whole thing a sham.

I understand not wanting to give up power by ousting them in purple areas, for both parties. People’s lives and the trajectory of the country is dependent on which party is in charge, unfortunately. Which is sad in itself.

But, I was comparing the difference between the two parties and how they would respond. This whole “neither side has any morals” idea is bullshit, and is just false equivalency at work again.

And yet here we are… where both parties end up with the same outcome. You can claim that it’s false equivalency, yet in the real world, either party… companies are in charge. Either party, nobody wants to strip out the corruption.

It’s not “false” equivalency when both sides literally yield the same outcome. Are individuals different in the parties? Sure. I never said otherwise. However here we are looking at outcomes… and they’re the fucking same. Don’t “false equivalency” me again.

And yet here we are… where both parties end up with the same outcome

But it’s not the same outcome. Plenty of democrats are calling for his resignation. They aren’t goosestep lockstep in this at all. It’s a debate, not a foregone conclusion that “our guy is to be protected.” How is that not better?

But it’s not the same outcome.

So he’s going to resign? No? Then it’s the same outcome isn’t it?

In what way is the outcome the same?

Republicans support their own, try to label investigations as politically motivated, then pardon people who are convicted.

Democrats are calling for this guy to resign right away, and Biden says he won’t pardon his own SON if convicted.

Looks like a huge difference in outcomes to me.

So he’s resigning? You might want to tell him that.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/25/nyregion/menendez-bribery-charges.html

Lip service means nothing. Clearly your “special” party isn’t pressuring him enough.

I know. I’m saying the GOP would actually defend his actions and say there’s nothing wrong with it, because that’s what they do.

I understand not wanting to hurt the American people. But Democrats aren’t going to just pretend it’s fine either.

Because we literally did this to Al Franken without any formal anything and regretted it for years.

I think what Franken did was inappropriate but there’s no doubt the democrats were hasty. If this dude is a criminal then let the process happen and boot him then. They can easily go “we are waiting for the result and until then he is removed from his committees” (though he has already resigned from them but you get the sentiment). That’s incredibly reasonable.

Because it’s not a conviction, yet.

As soon as that happens, or as soon as it becomes painfully obvious they are guilty everyone should be calling for them to resign.

But no, not before then. It’s too easy these days to just make up shit and hope it sticks, and takes too long to disprove it in the court of public opinion.

Please read up on what happened to Acorn a few years ago. They did nothing wrong, but with highly edited video ‘evidence’ they were destroyed in the court of public opinion and destroyed.
