Fair enough. The real issue is when you play in HDR (via inverse tonemapping) on an OLED. It’s just missing sooooo much shadow detail. It’s a well known issue that they never fixed and probably will never fix unfortunately. I’ve been experimenting with ways to recover the shadow detail using reshade add-ons, but so far no luck :-(.

If you take a screenshot in horizons and then take the same screenshot in odyssey, you’ll see that blacks are crushed to absolute shit in odyssey. You can even raise gamma to max and you still will not recover that shadow detail. The devs clipped it. They tonemapped the game incorrectly. It becomes blatantly obvious when you play this game on an oled screen haha.

I.e., take screenshot in horizons where tjere is a large shadow or no light hitting a part of your ship. Replicate it in Odyssey. It’ll be obvious. Or try raising gamma to max and you’ll see that zero shadow detail is recovered.

Also idk if you’re familiar with reshade, but if you google and install Lilium’s HDR shaders, it makes it even easier to see how crushed shadows are. It shows you a waveform visual that maps brightness. (Graph works in sdr as well as hdr)

I really don’t believe they are actively developing another headset. I think thelat at one point they may have filed a patent for a design, but I really wouldn’t bank on this. Still more likely than Half Life 3 though.

Fyi on PCVR, this headset will NOT have HDR, Eye tracking, and other features. Kind of an important call out…

Huh? As much as i don’t like standalone headsets, all of the current standalone headsets easily vastly outspec the index…you should look at the specs…

I.e. index is missing:

• oled screen

• pancake lenses

• eye tracking

Most of the newer headsets have this and are cheaper than the index…

The fact that the grossly outdated (spec wise) valve index is still $1k, 4 years after release, is fucking outrageous. That thing should be like at least half the price by now. Valve is out of their minds…

No, this guy is dogshit. You can’t blindly make hybrid files by combining DV and HDR streams. Many of them have different grading and cannot just be slapped together willy nilly. The people making these “hybrid” files NEVER fucking check to make sure there isn’t a brightness mismatch. I wish they’d just release the P5 files instead of this P8 hybrid fucking bullshit. DVSUX NEVER made these hybrid dogshit files.
