I’d still avoid American brands. Currently using a Pixel but if I had to buy again, I’d be looking at a Fairphone or Samsung. I’d probably stretch this Pixel for a while. Technically it’s got 5 more years of software support.

You can install Graphene OS to prolong its usage.

I really want to keep using mine but the 3g sunset will render it useless with my current provider.

It’s really annoying.

what are you currently using?

I tend to buy a phone, and use it for 4+ years, but cant imagine using it longer

Pixel 3a, bought it used when the 5 came out.

Alternatively if you can live without a bleeding edge device, maybe next time you could get a used one (assuming there’s a reputable seller within Canada). To my knowledge, that shouldn’t benefit the company other than people seeing you use it, and it’s also more environmentally friendly.

You mentioned the Fairphkne and I’ve been eyeing it too. Has anything changed with how we can actually get it here? Or do we still have to do our homework and check if it’ll work with our existing providers or get a new plan?

I have a FP5 in the EU and I love it. I think you can get a 4, and I’m under the impression the 5 will work on some bands but not others in Canada

I wrote “eyeing” but that’s an understatement — I’ve been mouthwatering. I’m a bit of a sucker for things I can tinker with. I don’t need a new phone at the moment, but the day may come soon.

I’ve looked around and yeah, that’s my impression too, that the 5 doesn’t work with certain bands, but I don’t think I’ve seen a definitive list.

I did see that some people have used some middleman service to get the 4.

I promise I’ll post on Lemmy somewhere (whenever it makes sense?) this fall when I visit the US with my Fairphone 5*

*Trip subject to how terrible things are there at the time lol

ran into that when i brought my Canadian S22U to the UK. Often i had perfect high speed service, and other days I just had 0 service.

How to purchase a Fairphone 5, and get it shipped to Canada: https://www.clove.co.uk/products/fairphone-5-5g.

I have a Fairphone 5, and have used it since launch (2023Q4) on a major Canadian carrier. And before then, I used the Fairphone 4, since 2021Q4.

Thank you.

It’s annoying that they won’t sell directly to Canada.

Edit: but please edit your post so the period at the end doesn’t become part of the clickable link.

Still have to check. A colleague is using, an FP4, I think, in Ontario, but I don’t know which provider he’s on.

I came across this phone the other day, another alternative but I haven’t looked too much into it.

You could also flash this onto your Pixel

Yeah, I’m considering GrapheneOS.

I had no idea Jolla were still developing. This device seems brand new. Interesting.

Graphene is ridiculously easy to flash. Back up your data & plug in your phone then click install. Highly recommended. Been using it for years and I get very frequent security updates.

Hmm…looks like it needs a subscription for the OS, not sure about that. I’m looking for a new new phone myself.

“Your purchase includes a 12-month Sailfish OS full license subscription valued at €59.88 (€4.99/month), granting access to all releases, commercial components, and feature upgrades. After the first year, you can choose to continue your subscription and support Sailfish OS development further. Even without renewal, your device will continue to function, but future software updates and commercial component upgrades will not be available.”

That could be fine. Cheaper hardware, without built-in cost of updates. Then you pay for update support.

I just want a graphene alternative for my samsung…

I think it’s part of the tarrif strategy of aiming for highly substitutable goods. The goal is to inflict maximum pain on the states while minimizing harm to Canadians. So, banning American booze is an easy call because that’s super replaceable with a large number of alternatives, many of which are Canadian. There aren’t, as far as I know, a lot of great device alternatives that are widely adopted etc (I believe about 2/3rds of mobile devixes are Apple or Google) and I imagine the government is wary of throwing the doors wide open to Chinese devices.

Let the Chinese devices in. Who cares American Chinese they are both spying on us. Let me choose who I want to spy on me. And their devices are getting really good.
