TL;DR for the TL;DR: Firefox + uBlock Origin

Wrong link. But Mozilla is not going to kill uBlock Origin too. Firefox supports the old MV2 and new MV3 version for extensions.

Too long to read? I get it. Here’s the summary. Download Firefox.

Yes. One option is to download it from here: https://librewolf.net/

It’s Firefox, with the Firefox branding and some questionable decisions like the AI chatbot sidebar and a few others removed

Just a heads up, you posted this 5 times here and 3 times on lemmy.ml

I’m using Fedia - must be an issue with replication or something. I have no control over that, sorry.

Ahh those bugs suck. Though I think you should still be able to delete the duplicates.

Hoping this could maybe help convince my friends who are just looking for a chromium alternative and won’t even consider firefox

Give them time with the full modern web experience. I know someone I’ve been trying to get to switch for years whose computer died right around the cutoff, so the new Chrome they installed on their new computer had no real ad blockers via being v3 only, and she switched within a week.

The problem is they apparently really value having cross device syncing between desktop and phone, and dislike Firefox on mobile a bit due to speed. Idk I mean yeah I think chromium browsers on android are technically faster (seems to me at least) but with no ads it’s way better

Good news, there is cross device syncing. You just have to make a Firefox account. That might be a no go for some folks, but it is an option. If Firefox on mobile is slower, I have not noticed the difference. Have they just refused to try it?

I think they know about the cross device syncing but yeah think it’s too slow. Idk how long it’s been since they used it.

There is an issue I’ve had with Firefox on Android that I’ve tried to fix but haven’t been able to, where the first time I load a website in like… An hour or 2, it takes a long time to load. After that everything is pretty quick but the first load after the app has been suspended (is my guess) is slow

Huh, I have noticed that. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it. I 100% agree any slowness is outweighed by ad blockers though.

Yeah Firefox on Android is extremely so for me at times. I’ve never noticed it specifically being on the first page load after a while, but I haven’t been paying that much attention. I use firefox on mobile so that I can install ublock, because when I’ve tried to use a DNS-based solution in the pass I ran into all kinds of issues with battery drain, but the experience does leave a little to be desired at times.

Would it be interesting to y’all if I wrote about how to capture performance profiles on Firefox for Android so that you can report bugs to developers?

Yes that would actually be very helpful! I’ve had trouble doing that on the android version, and I have heard that can help show what exactly is causing the issue. I have heard some settings on ublock can cause this (which I have tried tinkering with)

cross device syncing between desktop and phone

This is me

But with Firefox cross device syncing is possible, isn’t it? I think that I used it at some point. Open Firefox Settings > Sync:

Yeah I’m realizing I didn’t word that super well. Yes sync is a thing and they know that, but they don’t want to have to use Firefox on mobile because they think it’s slow

I gave up in Firefox Sync an year ago as it doesn’t work reliably for me. The sent tab function, the main reason I use sync, tabs are frequently delayed (as in over a minute) or straight up not working. Now I uses SimpleX group for my cross device communications.

Maybe it is improved but I’m too lazy to try.

this is assuming that mozilla won’t ruin firefox as usually by copying the bad parts of chromium

seeing the latest 5 years, i don’t have much hope

Aren’t they already enshittifying FF?

It’s like with Windows, most people don’t know or think about an alternative. Or care about privacy and the advantages. It’s just work and annoying to do any change.

Incorrect.

Vivaldi, which is Chromium-based, has a built-in ad blocker.

I really like chromes tab grouping features, I wish firefox had that. But adblock is more important than groups so the change wasn’t too hard to deal with

I never used those, but I have been using Winger for a while. Not a strong recommendation, but I am continuing to use it. I also heavily abuse tab searching and switching via the awesomebar.

Hey thank you for the links! I’ll check em out :D

Ohh this might! Thank you :)
