I know a lot of people have grown attached to their free stuff, but it looks like a time has come to pay for the stuff we consume
If that’s your mindset then you are simply in the wrong place buddy!
I block all 3rd scripts and some first party scripts along with restricting capabilities of the domains I do allow with a combination of uBlock Origin and NoScript. I’m definitely not paying for a subpar experience compared to this
Can I have extra boot juice thank you so very much please?
Ask for it on my r/onlyfans and I’ll consider it
You’re the bootlicker soooo…
Trying to get a discount?
Not for me. If I can’t have it for free, then I just won’t have it at all 🤷.
Absolutely fair, I’m pretty sure this is going to hurt youtube as a platform in the long run
Not really IMO. If it gets to that, most people will pay. Sure, there will be workarounds, like ReVanced and the likes, but it will be unknown or too complicated to do for most users.
Perhaps, it’s funny tho that YouTube is mostly just informing the world that adblock exists
I think most people know that adblockers exist, they just don’t know how to implement them on their devices.
Anyone half cabable should be able to google that
Yeah, I’m with ya on that… unfortunatelly, from what I’ve witnessed living for 38 years on this earth, most people are not.
And as much as I would like to disagree I feel like you might just be right
That’s kinda the point
Pay for things that respect you as a user, not this garbage.
I don’t even pay for those, lol 😂… cuz sooner or later, they turn into garbage anyway.
You can always stop paying or switch platforms. In my experience, it’s always good to switch every couple years for a lot of services online. It seems to be long term users that most often get milked
Yeah, but that just makes me feel like I’ve thrown away my money for nothing, like the platform didn’t get any better, it got worse… one of the many reasons why I pirate as well.
Suck cost fallacy. If you’re going to pay, switching is the best idea.
With that said, I’m going to pirate everything I can (and pay the person who ripped it instead) till I die
Well, to be honest, especially for warez, yes, it involves A LOT of knowledge. And that’s not easy to gain, there are no books on the subject and you can’t study RCE (I haven’t seen any courses that dive into the subject), so yeah, it’s pretty hard to actually gain some knowledge, and even harder since most of the tricks of the trade are shared between warez groups, and it’s hard to get into one.
So, yeah, I would throw money at that one or two people that actually did manage to crack a particular piece of software. Teams of engineers and programmers working on the software and a team of one or two guys managed to beat your copy protection… bravo 👏.
Of course. They deserve it more for their time than software engineers on a fixed salary anyway.
Plot twist: it’s the same software engineers who work to cracking their code. Perfect strategy to continued employment as well as earning money on the side from people like me. Of course, I appreciate their time nonetheless.
Really? I thought most of them did it for fun, as a challenge… but yeah, I guess you mught be right… there are some really hard copy protections and, to be honest, I have no idea how they managed to crack them, unless they have inside knowledge of the protection.
That’s a weird way to put it, and I am one who sails the high seas.
If your power company gets shittier, and you switch to a different one, will you be thinking “oh those years I’ve thrown away my money when the service was good”?
You don’t pay hoping that the service gets better. You pay for the quality of service that you want now.
I agree, you have a point there.
Maybe I’m just hoping that things should improve if you spend money on the service, not go worse. Maybe I just get dissapointed and regret ever paying for that service.
Got it. I understand your point now.
It’s a trade off. Unfortunately it seems that a lot of companies have figured out that making things more premium for fewer people means making the same amount of profit for less work
The way YouTube is handling it tho, is quite horrible
I would like for Nebula to support a secure payment method. But for now this is what I’ll be using. I can still support my favoutite creators on patreon
I was considering Nebula – many of my subscriptions are there – but I need downloading (I am currently using NewPipe for that) and they have also had some anti-anti-Zionist tendencies.
Wait they don’t have downloading? Ain’t that a basic feature nowadays :/
They have no third-party clients either, which I assume is to prevent piracy (which will happen anyway). For me, it has the opposite effect – I would pay if they enabled downloads. Now I just freeload the non-exclusive content off YouTube.
...
Because I’m bad at identifying sarcasm, this section exists in case “Ain’t that a basic feature nowadays :/” was meant sarcastically (it could be because of how much more popular streaming has become as opposed to downloading).
Well, I don’t really have mobile data (way too expensive in my country), so I pre-download videos to watch/listen to in public transit.
Ow, that just made me reconsider getting in the platform at all. thank you. Also, yes, sarcasm. No worries, I struggle with it too
If content is sent to your pc then there is a way to save it, regardless of how they try to hide that
Technically yes, but you might be interested in hdcp
A basic feature where exactly?
YouTube, deezer, Netflix, spotify, yt music, apple music, etc
YouTube allows you to download videos? And Netflix too?! Can you keep them if you stop your subscription?
If I pay this kind of money, I expect an API to user-respecting third party apps.
That’s what they should do. Allow use of Reddit-style third party apps (before the API debacle) for premium users.
That would be awesome
I will stop consuming before I start paying for something like Youtube.
That’s kinda the point YouTube is going for. People who do not pay, and who use ad blockers are actively costing them money. People don’t realize how expensive it is to host an hd video that can be streamed to millions of people. There’s a reason no one has been able to seriously compete with YouTube.
So hide the HD stuff behind a paywall. I’m perfectly happy at 720p for the VAST majority of videos. Might even agree to go lower if it means I can watch it without ad breaks.
The video being in SD doesn’t make it free to host. YouTube still has to pay for the servers that store the videos and for delivering the video to you. And guess what! Most people don’t watch in HD and don’t even realize it.
Is it cheaper? Yeah. Is it free, no. Delivering just the audio for billions of users would cost more than most people will see in a lifetime ten times over.
You brought up specifically HD. I’m willing to watch ads so that YT can continue delivering even lower quality videos as long as those ads don’t interrupt the video.
I misunderstood your point about no ad breaks, I thought you meant no advertising at all on videos.
That said, HD was just an adjective. I can edit and remove it if you want, but the point still stands that hosting anything at YouTube’s scale is stupid expensive. Even if you cut the data load again and go down to 480p it’s still crazy expensive that requires compensation to exist.
Something like 275,000 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube daily and users watch about one billion hours daily.
people make videos for people for free. youtube (almost) doesnt pay anything to their content creators in ad revenue. it’s parasitic to annoy the audience into paying with ads
Patreon, Nebula, floatplane, skillshare, etc. I follow a bunch of YouTubers on some of those
Weird that you call the literal and metaphorical “host” the parasite in this.
You’re an idiot.
Feel free to elaborate

You’re telling me I should pay when it clearly says Premium at the top.
Are you paying for that? If so, ask the support chat that comes with the subscription
if not: oof

You got flamed for being right.
You mean the stuff that people uploaded to YouTube, which YouTube didn’t create for themselves, and has no right to build a wall around?
There’s no wall, you’re free to email your favourite creators to ask if they can email you their videos
There is still a wall around the content hosted on YouTube.
No I mean the bandwidth, engineering, hosting, support, moderation and community events
Services which were freely offered when creators added their content to YouTube, at no charge to YouTube, with no indication that there would be an attempt to charge an access fee.
YouTube encouraged the community to build a theme park while not paying even minimum wage to most of the builders, then decided to charge the community for admission to the park they built. This should be regarded as fraud and/or theft.
it was, and still is, a private platform. In the EU the new digital markets act now considers big players “gatekeepers” and actually does something about this behaviour
Jesus fucking Christ, did it take your only two neurons sparking from ear to ear to generate that thought?
Youtube has a cost by hosting the videos for you and a billion other users to view. If you can’t see how that costs a shitton of money, you might actually be an idiot.
Yeah but they have a premium account already.
Someone forgot to remove // from the code.
Vanced and revanced are modded versions of the youtube app that block ads and enable premium stuff without paying for that. I used to run that while I had premium, cuz it is actually a lot better than the stock youtube app even apart from blocking ads
That’s probably from ReVanced, it reads Premium by default.
It’s an iPhone. I’m not sure if you can install revanced.
Also, I used to have YouTube premium subscription and they do shit like that.
Soon you will be, the EU is forcing apple to behave like a good little trillion dollar company. If you’re outside the us tho, I dunno.
I’m on a family subscription for YouTube premium. It’s affordable that way
Hopefully, meanwhile, I’m experimenting with yattee and invidious.
So far, it’s running rock solid.
The only downside is my isp provides unlimited youtube in my data plan. Hopefully invidious is covered as well.
Chuckles in EU net neutrality
I’ve been hearing about this yettee client, but I can’t find it. Do you happen to have a link? I’d like to try it out
The mobile plan have unlimited social media so yeah.
There you go:
Appstore https://apps.apple.com/app/id1595136629
Github https://github.com/yattee/yattee
yoooo, thank you!!!
Each to his own I guess… yes, those are cheap, but I’m still teaching my kid to pirate. These skills (and others as well) will become valuable in the long run in real life as well… my 2 cents.
Oh yes, that is a skill I can recommend, even tho I avoid using it unless necessary
So do I, but it never hurts to know how to do something 😉.
uYou++ is an option for iPhone (installed through AltStore/Sideloadly.
Been using it for about two years now? Works flawlessly. Well, YouTube, if you’d wanted me to stay on the stock app you should have left the ‘press info and click do not show ad’ feature enabled.
I don’t have the energy to go through the hoops to sideload an app.
Also, yattee supports sponsorblock natively.
