If that’s your mindset then you are simply in the wrong place buddy!

I block all 3rd scripts and some first party scripts along with restricting capabilities of the domains I do allow with a combination of uBlock Origin and NoScript. I’m definitely not paying for a subpar experience compared to this

Yeah, but that just makes me feel like I’ve thrown away my money for nothing, like the platform didn’t get any better, it got worse… one of the many reasons why I pirate as well.

Suck cost fallacy. If you’re going to pay, switching is the best idea.

With that said, I’m going to pirate everything I can (and pay the person who ripped it instead) till I die

Well, to be honest, especially for warez, yes, it involves A LOT of knowledge. And that’s not easy to gain, there are no books on the subject and you can’t study RCE (I haven’t seen any courses that dive into the subject), so yeah, it’s pretty hard to actually gain some knowledge, and even harder since most of the tricks of the trade are shared between warez groups, and it’s hard to get into one.

So, yeah, I would throw money at that one or two people that actually did manage to crack a particular piece of software. Teams of engineers and programmers working on the software and a team of one or two guys managed to beat your copy protection… bravo 👏.

Of course. They deserve it more for their time than software engineers on a fixed salary anyway.

Plot twist: it’s the same software engineers who work to cracking their code. Perfect strategy to continued employment as well as earning money on the side from people like me. Of course, I appreciate their time nonetheless.

Really? I thought most of them did it for fun, as a challenge… but yeah, I guess you mught be right… there are some really hard copy protections and, to be honest, I have no idea how they managed to crack them, unless they have inside knowledge of the protection.

That’s a weird way to put it, and I am one who sails the high seas.

If your power company gets shittier, and you switch to a different one, will you be thinking “oh those years I’ve thrown away my money when the service was good”?

You don’t pay hoping that the service gets better. You pay for the quality of service that you want now.

I agree, you have a point there.

Maybe I’m just hoping that things should improve if you spend money on the service, not go worse. Maybe I just get dissapointed and regret ever paying for that service.

ChaoticNeutralCzech

They have no third-party clients either, which I assume is to prevent piracy (which will happen anyway). For me, it has the opposite effect – I would pay if they enabled downloads. Now I just freeload the non-exclusive content off YouTube.

...

Because I’m bad at identifying sarcasm, this section exists in case “Ain’t that a basic feature nowadays :/” was meant sarcastically (it could be because of how much more popular streaming has become as opposed to downloading).

Well, I don’t really have mobile data (way too expensive in my country), so I pre-download videos to watch/listen to in public transit.

That’s kinda the point YouTube is going for. People who do not pay, and who use ad blockers are actively costing them money. People don’t realize how expensive it is to host an hd video that can be streamed to millions of people. There’s a reason no one has been able to seriously compete with YouTube.

@Lumidaub@feddit.de

So hide the HD stuff behind a paywall. I’m perfectly happy at 720p for the VAST majority of videos. Might even agree to go lower if it means I can watch it without ad breaks.

The video being in SD doesn’t make it free to host. YouTube still has to pay for the servers that store the videos and for delivering the video to you. And guess what! Most people don’t watch in HD and don’t even realize it.

Is it cheaper? Yeah. Is it free, no. Delivering just the audio for billions of users would cost more than most people will see in a lifetime ten times over.

@Lumidaub@feddit.de

You brought up specifically HD. I’m willing to watch ads so that YT can continue delivering even lower quality videos as long as those ads don’t interrupt the video.

@_danny@lemmy.world

I misunderstood your point about no ad breaks, I thought you meant no advertising at all on videos.

That said, HD was just an adjective. I can edit and remove it if you want, but the point still stands that hosting anything at YouTube’s scale is stupid expensive. Even if you cut the data load again and go down to 480p it’s still crazy expensive that requires compensation to exist.

Something like 275,000 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube daily and users watch about one billion hours daily.

Services which were freely offered when creators added their content to YouTube, at no charge to YouTube, with no indication that there would be an attempt to charge an access fee.

YouTube encouraged the community to build a theme park while not paying even minimum wage to most of the builders, then decided to charge the community for admission to the park they built. This should be regarded as fraud and/or theft.
